Zanesh Ahal

t’s a hotter climate, tropical/arid location depending on your relative location to the sea and the southern deserts. If Dendrum is Western Europe, this place is similar to the fertile crescent and northern Africa rolled into one land. Ruled by a magotheocracy—basically there is no distinction between magic, science, and the divine here. Whatever brings results and has the most power rules. It’s fairly relaxed in culture but has a notable heirarchy—the Upper Magi govern over different delegated affairs of the state, chaired by the Lord Magos who acts as a ruler for 3 year terms. Each magos has mastery over at least 2 kinds of magical power. The lower magi form a senate that represent different areas of the land and also create agencies for different aspects of government, called Therates, managed by heads called Theristrates.

Also, trade is super huge there but, unlike Dendrum, which is highly bureaucratic and autocratic, Zanesh Ahal is rampant with corruption and nepotism. Power and skill may rule, but only if one can get through the classism and bribery. Novelty is very important, as with entertainment. Slavery has just recently been abolished in some provinces of Zanesh Ahal.

It shares a northwestern border with Dendrum, who shares a tentative alliance because of strategic marriage with key magi.

To the direct north lies Goldmaw, or the Goldmaw Wilds, a land of terrible monsters, bands of marauders, and hordes of numerous goblinoid, orc kind, and troll kin clans who have been pushed back into the wastes. However, there are unimaginable caches of gold ore, iron, jewel deposits, and a multitude of lost treasure from the old trade voyages between Ravensfjord (even farther north) and Zanesh Ahal. Explorers and settlers still attempt these lands.

(I’m making up some stuff as I go but a lot of it is on paper already. Like 80% formed already) Trade is free as the government wants to encourage as much exotic matter, novel invention/materials, and ideas to flow in and out of the country, and, as such, it is somewhat dangerous

In fact, Dendrum, Ravensfjord, Zanesh Ahal and Goldmaw meet at a border intersection known by many names, such as Nightpointe, the Gaol of Life, the Prison of Souls, Doomseye, etc.
It’s proved to be a point of huge contention and contest in border struggles in past wars and is now at the forefront of most conflict

but again, strategic marriages, trade, and threats from the Wilds tend to keep the kingdoms from warring
To the west there is the Gulf of Green Waters
(Dendrum’s southern border)
this extends west for quite a ways and has many isles and archipelagos within, and opens to the southwest to the Open Sea.

Far enough west across the Green is Murih Kindeh (known to all foreigners and Muri Kindi), a land much like Zanesh Ahal, but with an overgrowth of jungle and vast desert in the central and western lands. The jungle spans the entire coast and much of the northern part of the territory, until it is overtaken by the Gorampa territory to the north, which is mostly desert, redrocks, and badlands.

Gorampa and Murih Kindeh have a much smaller human population, but their diversity is very normal there, as there is a lot more interracial exchange, relations, trade, and share of rule, though these areas tend to be lower in technology.
The south and east across the deserts of Zanesh Ahal there are vast mountains and with great labyrinths of caves filled with nomadic tribes, exiles, the djinni, and other undesirable creatures, as well as the sand dwarves.

There are a few passes here into more foreign lands, but the region remains fairly encapsulated because of the mountain ranges enveloping Zanesh Ahal. The passes in and out to the south and east are extremely hard to traverse, and the mountains are nigh impossible to cross over or through caves. The heat at the sand passes through the mountains are known as the Gates of Fire—and their names are not for nothing. They are nearly impassable without months of preparation and powerful magic.

There have been few expeditions to the lands to the south, so most Zaneshi have sparse knowledge of what lies beyond the rock, sand and fire.
So

Where would Serafax fit into this?
Jared Bajkowski

That’s a good question. To answer it, we might look into other aspects of Zaneshali life. Ask me about something else—there are plenty of plausible origins for him in this land, especially with the Good- and Lawful-aligned gods of Dendrum (Abadar, Erastil, Iomedae, etc.) influencing Dendrumites to look down on the free ways of the Zaneshali lifestyle.

He could have entered at the beckoning of the dark druids of Farnorth in Ravensfjord, or perhaps one of the myriad magicians, rogues, and dark clerics of Zanesh Ahal. Perhaps a gladiator even sought aid to help in spilling more blood.
*in one of the many arenas.
Or, a ship sailing the Gulf of Green Waters laden with spices delivered you, at the Port of Ur, only to be discovered by the Magosi guard for smuggling Serafax into Zanesh Ahal through a host, forcing you into a narrow escape.

There are plenty of guilds, thieves’ orders, dark agencies, and questionable sanctums where you could arrive. There are plenty of urchins that are looking for a leg up. There are plenty of people everywhere looking for some advantage in the power game. There are agents of Dendrum, Ravensfjord and even Zanesh Ahal itself looking to take national action and enter into political intrigue.
